The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will present the final concert of their 2009-2010 season under the baton of music director Dan Judd, June 6, 2:00 p.m. at Summit High School auditorium. This concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

This final concert of the Winds season is entitled Back Home in the U.S.A., and will feature important literature from American composers (after our concert of Russian Music). The program kicks off with David Holsinger's "American Faces", a tribute to the multi-faceted qualities of America. "The Symphonic Gershwin" includes some favorite tune of iconic composer George Gershwin. Percy Grainger's "Colonial Song" shares a wistful mood similar to a Mark Twain book or a Stephen Foster tune. Alto saxophone soloist Jayne Morrison will perform "Persuasion", a lovely Sammy Nestico piece for band and alto. Ms. Morrison has been a member of the Cascade Winds for many years, as well as a noted music educator in Central Oregon. "Americans We" march was dedicated by composer Henry Fillmore "to all of us."

"American Salute" by Morton Gould is a band classic based on "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". And no program of American music would be complete without the music of Stephen Foster. "A Tribute to Stephen Foster" includes several of the over 125 songs he left us. "I Want To Live" is a great John Denver classic that singer Scott Carroll will perform with the Winds. Scott has appeared in numerous important musical and drama productions throughout Central Oregon, and is currently a freshman voice major at the University of Oregon.

John Philip Sousa's "Semper Fidelis" is named in honor of his beloved United States Marine Corps, and is the march that Sousa considered to be his best. From the compositions of prolific composer Frank Ticheli, "Blue Shades" alludes to the original American genre of the Blues. Featured in this major work is a particularly energetic clarinet solo by Cascade Winds member Ted Burton. Mr. Burton is band director at Mountain View High School, and a familiar performer/conductor on the Bend music scene.

This is the second season the Cascade Winds have been conducted by Dan Judd. After an extensive tenure as a music teacher in Washington State, including election into the Washington Music Educator's 'Hall of Fame', Judd is currently Director of Bands at Summit High School in Bend. A co-founder of the Northwest Wind Symphony, an award-winning community band in Western Washington, Mr. Judd has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Northwest.

The Cascade Winds will be a featured performance group in the Centennial Celebration of the City of Redmond on the Fourth of July.

These concerts are free, open to the public and suitable for all ages. For more information visit www.cascadewinds.org or call 593-1635. Summit High School is located at 2855 NW Clearwater Drive, Bend.

CASCADE WINDS SYMPHONIC BAND: From Russia With Love

Find our event on Facebook here.

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will present the second concert of their 2009-2010 season, under the baton of music director Dan Judd, Sunday, March 7, 2:00 p.m. at Summit High School auditorium. This concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

This second concert of the Winds, From Russia With Love, will feature important literature either about Russia, or from famous Russia composers. The program kicks off with Dmitri Shostakovich's "Festive Overture", displaying Shostakovich's finest pulsating, rhythmic drive. The Winds will continue with Tschesnokoff's beautiful "Salvation Is Created". Originally written for voices, the band arrangement explores dark colors that suit the piece well. "Russian Christmas Music" by American composer Alfred Reed is one of the most frequently performed pieces of concert band literature. Igor Stavinsky's "Circus Polka" is taken from what was originally a ballet for 50 ballerinas and 50 elephants!

Special guest soloist on this concert is trombonist Dr. Mark Babbitt, who will perform the famous "Concerto for Trombone and Band" by Rimsky-Korsakov. Dr. Babbitt maintains a very busy schedule which includes a large trombone studio at Central Washington University as well as constant performance with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will close with the robust "Finale from Symphony No. 4" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikowsky. Every section of the band must display the highest level of virtuosity for this favored "war horse".

This is the second season the Cascade Winds have been conducted by Dan Judd. After an extensive tenure as a music teacher in Washington State, including election into the Washington Music Educator's 'Hall of Fame', Judd is currently Director of Bands at Summit High School in Bend. This concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

The Cascade Winds season includes a variety of band standards, show tunes, orchestra transcriptions and marches that demonstrate the excitement and richness of great wind band literature. The December program opens with Jack Stamp's very energetic "Gavorkna Fanfare". Gordon Jacob's epic transcription of "William Byrd Suite" will follow. This band standard is based upon compositions Byrd penned nearly 400 years ago, but they remain fresh and interesting to this day. "Merry Music for Wind Band" will provide a complete change of pace. This effervescing frolic features alto sax and baritone horn solos of a burlesque nature. The first half of the concert will conclude with selections from "West Side Story", Leonard Bernstein's landmark musical. Highlights include "Maria", "I Feel Pretty", "Tonight", and "America".

Bernstein's "Overture To Candide" will open the second half of the concert. Then Malcolm Arnold's "Four Scottish Dances" will transport the concert audience to the misty land of the highlands. This classic work features beautiful melodies, especially for oboe and harp. Castanets, tambourines, maracas and other percussive fireworks will next highlight the Spanish "El Relicario". The concert will conclude with Ron Nelson's lively "Rocky Point Holiday", and features virtuosic playing by the entire band.

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band is comprised of gifted musicians from many walks of life. Their common thread is a love of wind band music and the desire to perform it at the highest possible level. All players volunteer their time and talent, and pay tuition to play. Their efforts to present band concerts of quality are a true treasure to our community.

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will present the third and final concert of their 2008-2009 season May 31, 2:00 p.m. at Summit High School auditorium. This concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

Under the baton of new music director Dan Judd, the Cascade Winds are having an exciting season of renewed enthusiasm and ever increasing audience numbers. After an extensive tenure as a music teacher in Washington State, including election into the Washington Music Educator's 'Hall of Fame', Judd is currently Director of Bands at Summit High School in Bend. A co-founder of the Northwest Wind Symphony, an award-winning community band in Western Washington, Judd has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Northwest.

This third concert of the Winds season includes a variety of band standards, solo features, orchestra transcriptions and marches that demonstrate the excitement and richness of great wind band literature. The program kicks off with razz-ma-tazz, side-slipping modulations and sliding trombones in Leonard Bernstein's "SLAVA!" The program will continue with Gustav Holst's band classic "Second Suite for Military Band in F Major", featuring strong sectional play and solos within the band from piccolo to tuba. Cascade Winds tubist Aaron Moore will perform "Tuba Tiger Rag" with the help of the singers and players in the band. The very famous Johann Strauss "Radetzky March" will conclude the first half.

Sam Hazo's soaring "Sky Is Waiting" opens the second half with a tribute to the evolution of aviation. Johan de Meij's fascinating "Symphony No. 1-The Lord of the Rings" brings to life several of the important characters and episodes of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic work. This monumental piece will call for the best from the Cascade Winds, as they aurally introduce you to Gandalf, Shadowfax, the Elvenwood and, of course, those lovable Hobbits. "The Stars and Stripes Forever" will bring the concert and the season to a rousing close.

These concerts are free, open to the public and suitable for all ages. Donations are gladly accepted. For various scheduling conflict reasons, rehearsals for this term have been moved from Thursday to Tuesday. All rehearsals will be at Summit HS. Please be in place, warmed up and ready to play at 7:00 p.m. Especially this first rehearsal, you should be there early enough to get the music from your section leader.

The cost of a one-credit class at COCC has remained the same, a total of $66.75. If you have any questions about rehearsal absences, please contact Dan: dan.judd@bend.k12.or.us
