Memorial Service for Keith Moon

Dear past and present Cascade Chorale and Cascade Winds members: Many of you have already heard the very sad news that Keith Moon, a wonderful trombone player, a great guy, husband and father was killed in a bicycle accident yesterday afternoon. He played with the Cascade Winds many terms and was the son of Chorale member Barbara Munster.

There will be a memorial service for Keith this Sunday, August 17, 3:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 230 NE 9th Street, Bend.

Cascade Winds Fall Term: Will You Be Joining Us?

This e-mail is going out to all past, present and, hopefully, future players with the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band. We hope you will be able to join us for Fall Term.

AFTER READING THROUGH THE FOLLOWING DETAILS, PLEASE E-MAIL ME BACK LETTING ME KNOW IF PLAN TO PLAY WITH THE WINDS THIS FALL.

This early response will help Dan plan what kind of music we will be able to tackle. Will we have any oboe players? Do we have enough percussionists for that big piece? Do we have any solo players Dan could incorporate? Is our flock of flutes returning? Is there a pianist in the group? You get the idea. SO YOUR PROMPT REPLY IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

DIRECTOR: We welcome Dan Judd as our director. He is busy planning music for the season.

FALL TERM: Rehearsals start Thursday, September 25, 7:00 p.m. probably in Pinckney but we may be switching to Summit HS.

CONCERTS: Sunday, December 7, Sunday, March 8 and Sunday, May 31, all at 2:00 p.m. at Summit High School. As you see, we will be doing just one concert each term this year with the goal of building up audience numbers. Check now to make sure you will be able to play the December concert as well as consistently attend rehearsals from September 25 through December 4. There may also be a dress rehearsal on December 6. It isn't fair to the group to commit to playing and then not come to rehearsals on a regular basis. If you have any questions about rehearsal absences, please talk to Dan.

REGISTRATION: The cost of a one-credit class at COCC has remained the same, a total of $66.75. Plus, if you have NEVER taken a class of any kind at COCC there is a one-time-never-pay-again fee of $25 for new students. Some scholarship funds should be available. Please let me know (in confidence of course) if availability of scholarship funds affects your ability to participate. Our fundraising efforts are on-going with our long-term goal to raise enough funds to pay musicians tuition. We are not there quite yet, however.

We Have Our New Director!

The competition was stiff, to say the least. But after close review of all the evaluations, both from each quarter and the final overall evaluation for those players that performed under all three directors, Dan Judd has been offered, and accepted, the director's position for the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band for the 2008-2009 season.

The band board will be meeting with Dan soon to talk about publicity issues (creating a flyer for the new season; convincing the Bulletin to do a feature story [anybody have some influence there?]), refining band policies, etc., etc.

Updated reports will go out to all of you as is needed BUT, if nothing else, make sure you have the date of our first rehearsal in September on your busy calendars: Thursday, September 25, 7:00 p.m. in Pinckney.

Thanks to all of you for your dedication over the last season, spread the word to any potential players you know that we have an exciting season coming up and we hope to see many of you back in September.

Thanks for a Great Season!

To all Cascade Winds Musicians: Thanks to all of you for pulling together, and pulling off, good spring concerts.

Specifically, of course, a huge THANK YOU to Sue for hanging in there through all the absences and missing parts and rough spots and bringing us up to a level at times we didn't think we would be able to achieve.

Many thanks to Lorene Judd for "orchestrating" the wonderful intermissions refreshments. And Thank You also to Helen Loeffler, our "official" meeter, greeter and program distributor. And to Dan Judd for being our liaison and facilitator at Summit High. It's SO great to have someone in the band connected to the performance venue. And many, many thanks to the entire percussion section for all the lugging back and forth and set up and tear-down. They have a bit more to deal with than the rest of us as we leave with our clarinet in its case!

I am assuming I got everyone's music back last night. If that isn't the case, PLEASE let me know ASAP.

Our audiences were appreciative, although small. If any of you are interested in helping develop a marketing plan, figuring out methods of promotion, soliciting more donations, getting the Bulletin to actually write a story about us sometime, etc., please be in touch. Or if you know someone with this kind of expertise that isn't in the band, we would sure like to talk with them.

Some of you have been asking about Summer Band. For various reasons, there will be no COCC sponsored summer band this year. We do hope, of course, to see you all in the fall: first rehearsal is Thursday, September 25.

Regarding director selection, Michael will be checking with the candidates to determine if they are still interested in the position. Then all band members who played under ALL of the candidates will receive one more overall evaluation via e-mail. Michael will then make the selection.

Thanks again. It was a good year in so many ways. If you see Dave Sime, Dan Judd and/or Sue Mudge be sure to say THANK YOU once again.

Cascade Winds Present Its Spring Concert Series

The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will present the final concerts of its 2007-08 season June 1 and 2, under the direction of guest conductor Suzanne Mudge. The Sunday concert will begin at 2:00 p.m. and the Monday performance at 7:30 p.m., both at Summit High School auditorium. These concerts are free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.

This season artistic director Michael Gesme and the Cascade Winds have arranged for three exciting guest conductors to lead the group in its concert series. Our third guest conductor, Suzanne Mudge, is an active trombonist, conductor and educator. She currently performs with the Central Oregon Symphony, teaches band at Seven Peaks School and High Lakes Elementary and maintains a private studio. She performs annually with the Carmel Bach Festival and while living in the Bay area was principal trombonist with of the Modesto Symphony and the Women's Philharmonic, founded the Seraphim Brass Quintet and toured with the Band of the Golden West.

The Cascade Winds Spring Concert will feature works with interesting literary, film, and historical connections that have a wide variety of styles, sonic experiences, humor and satire. Ride was conceived by the composer Samuel Hazo as he followed, in his car, a fellow composer with a "lead foot" to his home on the country roads of Pennsylvania. This crazy and fast drive becomes a wild musical ride, with shifting meters and tonal centers, all at breakneck speed.

Norman Dello Joio subtitled his Satiric Dances "for a comedy by Aristophanes". As satire and wit are so prevalent in the works of the Greek poet, Dello Joio's music brings these traits to musical life through sudden dynamic contrasts, melodic and harmonic chromaticism, and a touch of Mediterranean folk character. The ensemble will take another turn in mood and style when they perform Serenade Romantic, a work of lyrical and flowing style by composer Joseph Turrin. It is such a gorgeous piece that one may be amazed that this same composer scored the film Nightmare on Elm Street III.

Perhaps the most interesting work on the program is a suite of film music from The Red Pony by Aaron Copland. The music has that "Western" sound, one of pastoral, wide open spaces, as well as a gentle, fresh, and transparent quality. It beautifully captures the warmth, emotions, and sensitivity of the characters in their ranch setting.

Spring Reherals Start This Week

Hope to see you at the first Cascade Winds rehearsal next week as we start rehearsing for our spring concerts under the baton of Sue Mudge.

First rehearsal is Thursday, April 3, 7:00 p.m. in Pinckney HOWEVER (if possible) please come a bit early (I'll be there at 6:15) to help set up (if you play clarinet or bassoon it is your turn to do set-up) pick-up music and register. Cost is the same: $66.75 for the one credit at COCC [plus that one-time-never-pay-again fee of $25 if you have never, ever, taken a class at COCC] Make your check payable to COCC, please.

If you took your name tag from last term home with you, please bring it back. And if you still have your blue band folder, bring that back, too.

Upcoming High School Band Concert: Mt. View HS & Japan

The students of Mountain View High School Symphonic Band are hosting members of the Kogane High School Symphonic Band during spring break. The Japanese students arrive at the beginning of the week and both bands will spend many hours together practicing for a collaborative concert they are performing on Friday, March 28th at 7:00 pm in the Mountain View HS auditorium. A lot of hard work and practice has gone into this event and it would be wonderful for the Bend community to show their support by attending this concert.

At Cafe Libri this month is duo Deb Yager and Bo Reynolds. "You can call us singer/songwriters with an Austin twist," says Yager. A former ad executive who'd lived the good life from NYC to Key West, New Orleans to Hawaii, Yager traded in the champagne & caviar for something more substantial; the call of her heart. She sold all her material possessions and moved to Austin, Texas to follow her dream of becoming a musician. Yager's music combines heartfelt, down to earth lyrics with a "voice from heaven."

Concert Updates and Schedule Reminders

Remember: The rehearsal next week which was originally scheduled for Wednesday is now back to THURSDAY because there is no longer a conflict with symphony.

REMEMBER to get that extra rehearsal on your busy calendars for Saturday, March 1, 7:00-9:30 p.m. at SUMMIT HS.

There were POSTERS to pick up at rehearsal but it doesn't look like very many people picked them up. If need be, you can print some up here.

High school students: Take at least one and post it in your band room at school and give one, or more, to your parents to take to their work.
Adults: Take them to your place of employment
Everyone: Take them to your church, the local grocery store, the local book store, the library, etc.

Attached is the PRESS RELEASE for the concerts, both a short blurb and the full release. Pick one and send it to your many friends and relatives.

Call for the concert on Sunday will be 1:00 p.m.

CONCERT DRESS: Just a reminder:

Women: black, black and black. Long sleeves, pants or skirts, black hose, high necks; i.e. the less white skin showing the better.
Men: Black tux or black suit, white shirt, black tie, black shoes, black socks.

If you have any questions about dress, make sure you get them answered on Thursday.

Rehearsal Change

News Flash: The rehearsal next week which was originally scheduled for Wednesday is now back to THURSDAY because there is no longer a conflict with symphony.

REMEMBER to get that extra rehearsal on your busy calendars for Saturday, March 1, 7:00-9:30 p.m. at SUMMIT HS.

Updates For Band Members

Thursday we will for sure work on Purple Heart and Can-Can. Remember that in the Pines we are doing just the last movement, starting at the pick-up to the 5th measure after 17 with the clarinet solo. And work on everything else, of course. Only 4 more rehearsals!

We are planning to list all the players in this next program with their occupation and where they live. Something like:

We don't need to know what company you work for but just a general category. The idea is to give our audience a more personal feel for the fact that we are just regular people who love to make music.

SO...what I need from each of you is what you do (banker, student, rocket scientist, etc.) and what town you live in. If you could e-mail that to me, great. I will also have a sign-up sheet on Thursday for people to fill in.

The sooner we reach our $12000 goal in the capital campaign, the sooner we can get started on the tuition fund for the band.
